UBUNTU 17.10 / the latest skype / webcam doesn`t work

Dear all,

Please help or at least advice.
I`ve got old A4 TECH PK-336 MB web camera. It seems to me that Skype doesn`t see it. But the built-in sound works well.

lsusb shows the following

ID 0ac8:305b Z-Star Microelectronics Corp. ZC0305 Webcam

The result of command "LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib32/libv4l/v4l1compat.so skype" is:

ERROR: ld.so: object '/usr/lib32/libv4l/v4l1compat.so' from LD_PRELOAD cannot be preloaded (cannot open shared object file): ignored.

The result of command "LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libv4l/v4l2convert.so skype" is:

ERROR: ld.so: object '/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libv4l/v4l2convert.so' from LD_PRELOAD cannot be preloaded (wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS32): ignored.

Please help to fix it if it is possible. Or at least help me to understand why it happen.

[SOLVED] Unable to install Ubuntu 16.04 on x399 Aorus gaming 7 Motherboard

I need to install the Ubuntu (in a dual boot mode) on my system. When I tried to boot from the Ubuntu Live USB stick. I get the following error.

[Firmware Bug]: AMD-Vi: IOAPC[130] not in IVRS table
AMD-VI: Disabling interrupt remapping

and just stay stuck there.

I have checked the Live USB stick on another system, it is working fine there.
Checked my bios it was already latest version (F3g).
Solution I have tried
After reading relevant question on this forums I enabled "SVM Mode" under M.I.T -> Advanced Frequency Settings -> Advanced CPU Core Settings, and enabled the "IOMMU" under "Chipset",

Now when I try Boot from Ubuntu Live USB it doesn't show the above error but after Aorus Welcome Screen it stays stuck at the blank screen.
This is the first time I put gigabyte motherboard in my system. Counting on you guys for support.

[ubuntu] IR remote control: ir-keytable recognizes only every second button press

Hi,

I am still a Linux Newbie and slowly finding my way around. Recently I set-up a new media centre and now am trying to get the remote to work.

I'm on Ubuntu 17.10 Kernel 4.13.14, running on Intel NUC7i5BNH.
Ubuntu recognizes the built-in IR receiver.

Code:

I: Bus=0019 Vendor=1283 Product=0000 Version=0000
N: Name="ITE8708 CIR transceiver"
P: Phys=
S: Sysfs=/devices/virtual/rc/rc0/input4
U: Uniq=
H: Handlers=kbd event4
B: PROP=0
B: EV=100013
B: KEY=fc000 0 0 8000 108000000000 e3fc000000000 2046002908a4ffc
B: MSC=10

Code:

sudo ir-keytable
Found /sys/class/rc/rc0/ (/dev/input/event4) with:
        Driver ite-cir, table rc-rc6-mce
Supported protocols: lirc rc-5 rc-5-sz jvc sony nec sanyo mce_kbd rc-6 sharp xmp
        Enabled protocols: lirc rc-6
        Name: ITE8708 CIR transceiver
        bus: 25, vendor/product: 1283:0000, version: 0x0000
Repeat delay = 150 ms, repeat period = 150 ms

I've configured a keytable for my Phillips RC6 remove (came originally with Zotac AD12+).
As you can see below, ir-keytable recognizes the button pressed and maps the keys to it.. BUT, it does so only for every second time I press each button. The first time (same scan code) doesn't get mapped.

Code:

Is this a bug or intended behaviour?
Is there a way for me to fix this issue and make the system respond correctly to each button press?

Thanks for your help!

USB storage media don't mount (or fail): "Cannot enable." / "unable to enumerate"

$

Hi all,

for a while now I've been having trouble mounting USB storage media under Xubuntu 17.04. They either don't mount at all, only after several tries, of if they do mount then they often fail after a few seconds.

It happens...
  • with USB sticks, an e-reader, a tablet, an SD card reader
  • with both USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 devices
  • with every USB port of my computer (2.0/3.0, front/back, directly or via USB 3.0 extension)

However, I have no issues...
  • with two USB 3.0 external HDDs I own (WD and Toshiba)
  • with any of the devices when using Windows on the same PC, or when using Windows on a different computer; leading me to believe that it might be more of a driver than hardware issue
  • with non-storage devices, both keyboard and mouse always work fine

This is tail /var/log/syslog when I mount a device (essentially the same every time the issue appears):

Code:

Jul 25 19:16:29 pc2015 kernel: [ 1309.907743] usb usb3-port11: Cannot enable. Maybe the USB cable is bad?
Jul 25 19:16:29 pc2015 kernel: [ 1310.799734] usb usb3-port11: Cannot enable. Maybe the USB cable is bad?
Jul 25 19:16:30 pc2015 kernel: [ 1311.691704] usb usb3-port11: Cannot enable. Maybe the USB cable is bad?
Jul 25 19:16:31 pc2015 kernel: [ 1312.583727] usb usb3-port11: Cannot enable. Maybe the USB cable is bad?
Jul 25 19:16:31 pc2015 kernel: [ 1312.583745] usb usb3-port11: unable to enumerate USB device

Then, lsusb will not show any new device. Sometimes (especially in the case of the e-reader) the device will be shown in gparted regardless, but can't then be mounted ("no Media").

In very rare cases (I'd say 1 out of 20) I can successfully mount, but then sometimes it fails and gets unmounted. I think this log message relates to it:

Code:

Jul 25 19:02:56 pc2015 colord-sane: io/hpmud/pp.c 627: unable to read device-id ret=-1
I have a Gigabyte Z97-HD3 mainboard and updated it to the most recent version. (Unless there's a fix already for the Intel ME issues...)

Does anyone have any idea what's causing this and how I can fix it?

Thanks!

My touchscreen intermittently works on my Dell Inspiron 7537, mostly not. It generally is not detected on bootup, but only when the computer resumes after suspend.

When it is detected (after suspend) lsusb produces:

Here's output from dmesg that might be helpful, i'm not sure what it means:

Booting from a LiveUSB, the touchscreen works out of the box on Ubuntu Gnome, Ubuntu 16.04.03 LTS, but not on Ubuntu 17.10, KDE Neon (any version the last couple of years) or Kubuntu. I've been having this problem for a few years now i've searched for answers on here and other websites but to no avail. Is there anyone out there who could help?

[xubuntu] Screen freezes with Nvidia GTX 760 [nvidia-384.90]

I'm running nvidia-384.90 proprietary driver on Nvidia GTX 760. Today after playing a video on Youtube I noticed an unusual stuttering -- the video was not in a fact a video but a slide-show. I tried another video hosting site to make sure the problem is not html5-related or something and my screen froze completely. I rebooted the system and launched a random game from Steam -- the screen froze immediately. After that I tried nvidia-340 and nouveau drivers but they behaved even more poor -- the screen froze several times the second I logged in the system. I'm pretty sure I've not made any critical changes to my system in a past week and this is a completely fresh install (a week or two old).

Here's my dmesg: https://bpaste.net/show/607e0d3dd825

And some selected parts of it:

Code:

[    2.012905] nvidia: loading out-of-tree module taints kernel.

[    2.026605] [drm] Initialized nvidia-drm 0.0.0 20160202 for 0000:01:00.0 on minor 0

I should mention that I've never had any video driver related problems on my xUbuntu system before, so this behavior seems very strange to me.

ScanDisc SSD with Ubunutu Freeze (Works in Windows)

Hello,

I've now had this issue with two different SSD's one new, and one old. I have Ubunutu installed (17.10), and at random points it freezes. I can't move the mouse or anything but I have to force restart my PC. This does not happen when I have Windows on any of my SSD's OR, when I install Ubunutu on my HDD. However, since my HDD is fairly slow, I of course want to have Ubunutu on my SSD. Has anyone else had this issue? Does anyone know how to fix or even search what it could be that happens? Because I really, really, want to have the OS on my SSD since it becomes a lot faster for booting and everything really.

PS. I had the same issue when I tried Antergos (based on Arch).

Thanks,
Tobias Johansson

Question about network card

Dear users,

when I read the speed of a network card (10, 100, 1000 mbps) I have a thought I can't understand.

Since I know in a ethernet cable there are 4 wires to transmit and 4 to receive (in gigabit ethernet), the speed (e.g. 1gbps) refers to the total speed (up + down) or is 1gbps up + 1gbps down simultaneously?

Thanks

I recently purchased the Avago (Broadcom) 9400-16i HBA after being pleased with their 9305-16i model in another of my systems. I updated the BIOS, driver, and firmware of the card to the latest versions:

Code:

Everything seemed to load fine aside from the kernel being tainted due to the unsigned 3rd party driver and the odd repeating messages at the end of this snippet:

Unfortunately, the server freezes after ~30m of operation. By freeze I mean that the display goes completely black and the server is inaccessible via SSH. This message appears in the kernel log a few minutes before the freeze:

Code:

I think it's a red herring because I also saw the same message in the kern.log before the addition of this card.

I don't see any other helpful log messages. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can further debug this problem?

Bluetooth refuses to connect!

I initially asked in General Help, but due to the lack of replies there, I'm narrowing the scope a bit.

So I'm trying to get Bluetooth working on a laptop running Ubuntu 16.04, but it just flat out refuses to connect. I can occasionally get it to pair (it keeps saying "invalid pin"), but it refuses to go any further.

Can someone please help me fix this before I pull all my hair out in frustration?
Thanks in advance!

Hi,

I've installed the nvidia driver 384.90 through "Software & Updates -> Additional Drivers".

I've tried to run several of the vulkan samples here and I always get:

Could not create Vulkan instance :
ERROR_EXTENSION_NOT_PRESENT

I've tried on several desktop environments and get the same error.

Any idea?

[ubuntu] Ubuntu 16.04 - How to reset onboard/PCI LAN entirely (power off and back on)?

Hello there,

I'm having an issue with WoL on my PC which I made myself some time ago. When I boot Windows before Ubuntu it's enabling some sort of WoL that I can't seem to disable no matter where I go. It's resulting in me having no network access when I boot Ubuntu after Windows without powering down completely and hitting an actual power switch on the wall/back of the case.

Seeing as the Windows component isn't going to play ball and I can't find an answer for disabling it entirely, I'm wondering the best way to cycle this NIC that's part of my motherboard so that once I boot Ubuntu I can just do this once and I'm off. I suspect I can do this with modprobe but i'd rather not screw things up completely...

Here's my lspci:

[ubuntu] ASUS Laptop Subwoofer under 17.10

In the past, I've got the external subwoofer that came with my ASUS Q550 laptop to work by following the instructions posted in this thread. It does not work, however, for the clean install of 17.10 that I recently did, The first problem was that I could not run hdajackretask . I solved that by following the instructions here for running synaptic under 17.10. Then, with hdajackretask open, I made the necessary selections and clicked "Apply now," whereupon I received the error message
tee: /sys/class/sound/hwC1D0/reconfig: Device or resource busy

Doing a little more digging, I found out that all hdajackretask does is create and execute a shell script called /tmp/hda-jack-retask-XXXXXXX, where XXXXXXX, is a more-or-less random string. All that script does, in turn, is echo a bunch of lines to /sys/class/sound/hwC1D0/user_pin_configs . Each line of that file is of the form 0xhh 0xhhhhhhhh , where each h is a hexadecimal digit. So, I thought, all I need to do is edit user_pin_configs manually.

It was easy enough to open /sys/class/sound/hwC1D0/user_pin_configs with vi , but here's the weird thing: the edits I make don't seem to stick. I write my changes, close the editor and then look at the file, and it is unchanged.

Why can't I alter /sys/class/sound/hwC1D0/user_pin_configs ?

Is there another way I could try to get my subwoofer working again?

Synaptics Mousepad - Never Works Properly!

$

Hello forum,

Running Ubuntu 17.10 and Windows 10 on a Samsung R530 laptop with a Synaptics touchpad.

Touchpad works fine with Windows, but the motion of the pointer is quite jerky in Ubuntu. Ubuntu runs well otherwise, but this is annoying enough to make me not want to use it.

Can anyone suggest what the problem might be please, and how to fix it?

Many thanks,
Alan.

Installing two GPU's

Hi,

I currently have the following video cards installed on my computer. [UBUNTU 16.04]

lspci -nn | grep -E 'VGA|Display'
Code:

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Bonaire XTX [Radeon R7 260X/360] [1002:6658]
02:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Bonaire XTX [Radeon R7 260X/360] [1002:6658]

I have installed the drivers for these video cards. However only one of the video cards have the driver installed.

dpkg -l amdgpu-pro
Code:

Desired=Unknown/Install/Remove/Purge/Hold
| Status=Not/Inst/Conf-files/Unpacked/halF-conf/Half-inst/trig-aWait/Trig-pend
|/ Err?=(none)/Reinst-required (Status,Err: uppercase=bad)
||/ Name          Version      Architecture Description
+++-==============-============-============-=================================
ii  amdgpu-pro    17.40-492261 amd64        Meta package to install amdgpu Pr

I use four screens, two attached per video card. One outputs everything perfectly, the other one gives me RGB bars all over the screen. I can see the cursor moving on the screen, but anything else I can't see.

How do I install the second one?

Thank you in advance,
W. Roelofs

PS: How do I enable en disable crossfire? (It worked in windows).
