My laptop is an Asus Q550LF; and all the F keys do something when I hold down fn and press them except for f5 and f6 which controls the screen brightness. I've always had this problem with ubuntu, but have just now got around to look for a fix. Does anyone have one?

MSI Ghost Pro GS60 w/ Skylake -- won't boot Ubuntu 15.10

Hi,

I just acquired a new MSI Ghost Pro GS60 (with Skylake, an SSD drive, and a PCIe drive) from XoticPC. I cannot get it to boot Ubuntu. I have tried mostly with the 15.10 distro. I've tried various BIOS settings and boot flags, especially those I found in various postings from people who've described how to install recent Ubuntu distros on recent MSI laptops. But none worked. If anyone has been able to run/install Ubuntu on this particular machine, I'd very much appreciate it if you'd tell me how you did it. Otherwise the machine will have to be returned.

Thank you,

Matthew Fleming

[SOLVED] Brother MFC-J6910DW not connecting any more

Hi

I installed Ubuntu a couple of weeks ago after having used Windows for about 1 year or 2. I tried to install my printer with the driver install tool (witch is new from last time I used Ubuntu) First it worked without any issues. But now something has happened and it won't connect any more. I don't know what I have been doing wrong, and I honestly don't know where to begin. I've reinstalled the printer, but with no luck. It still won't work. Last time I had issues with the firewall. But I opened the necessary ports. And even when I turn of the firewall it still won't connect.

Question about Wacom tablet support.

Hi there,

I've recently bought a Wacom INTUOS Draw tablet, and when I plugged in, it wasn't working. I understood that since the tabled was released in 2015 and I was using Ubuntu 14.04. I read the Linuxwacom site, but I would prefer not messing with that if not necessary.

My question is, is there a chance that my tablet will be supported in future Ubuntu releases, so should waiting for another release be enough or do I have to install these drivers manually anways? If it will be supported, will it be shown in changelogs specifically? Or 15.04 and 15.10 versions already support it?

Thanks in advance.

Sound stops working randomly under GNU/Linux

Hello,

I have this very annoying problem:

Laptop i3 4 GB RAM Lenovo, about 2 years old.

Under Windows 7 and 10 sound works well.

Under GNU/Linux sound stops working randomly, after 30 seconds or after 1 hour. The microphone continues to run, but I cannot hear sounds anymore.

Also, I tried "speaker-test" - it does not write errors, seems to work, just sound is not audible.

I tried installing fresh openSuse 41.2 Leap, Tumbleweed, with Xfce and KDE, Xubuntu, Linux Mint Cinnamon, with/without updates. The same behavior.

Until 10 days ago it worked correctly.

I am getting desperate. I searched the internet and tried all possible workouts from the forums.

I attach the sudo alsa-info.sh from my computer, when sound is not working (after it worked for about 1 hour).

[ubuntu] Install and get working hp g3010 scanjet on dell xps 18 dual boot 64bit

The scanner I have is an older model but it still works on Windows. However, trying to get it installed and working on Ubuntu 15.10 has been an adventure. This scanner is the last one listed on this page: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardwareSupp...entsScannersHp. I downloaded the hp3900 file, extracted it with the archive, and gave the sudo command as instructed. But then I got this error:

Code:

hp3900-series 0.12 - UPDATER

Select project sources you wish to update:
      1: hp3900-series backend
      2: SANE project
      3: Both projects

Update selection [3]: 1
- Action : Downloading hp3900-series backend sources via SVN ...
./UPDATE.sh: line 167: svn: command not found
- Error : Some error caused SVN command execution. Are you sure you've installed SVN client?

So then I went to the Ubuntu Software Center and downloaded and installed rapidsvn. When that opened, I immediately got the error that there was

' an invalid value 55 for a boolean key "/preferences/UseLastCommitMessage" in config file

I'm guessing the program automatically opens to the last commit, but since I've never used it before, of course there is no 'last commit'

I have neither the desire nor the time to debug an svn client I only got because I thought I needed it to install the drivers I was trying to get for the scanjet. So, a simple question: How do I get my scanjet to work, or is that a lost cause?

[ubuntu] pcmcia issue; /sys/bus/pcmcia/drivers/???

I am trying to get a National Instruments GPIB PCMCIA-GPIB+ card going on a laptop under 14.04.
I have _almost_ everyting in place, but I believe I need an entry in

/sys/bus/pcmcia/drivers

of the form
... /ni_pci_cs/new_id

a file into which I will put the vendor ID of the card I am trying to use.
Right now, the only thing in
/sys/bus/pcmcia/drivers/
is a sub-directory (???) called

(null)

I am unable to create either the needed sub-directory (ni_pci_cs) nor the file new_id .
Even as root, I get a message that the file does not exist!!
Should I be able to, e.g., a mkdir ni_pci_cs
???
Any ideas would be much appreciated ...

[SOLVED] Fiio eo7k garbled audio

Hello, I just installed Ubuntu 15.10, and am trying to get my audio to output correctly through my Fiio amp/dac. Problem is, everything that outputs through it while it's plugged in through USB is completely garbled. This didn't happen under Windows, and if I try my HDMI audio from my video card to my monitor, it works fine, no garbled audio at all. So, I'm at a loss for what could be causing the audio to become garbled when outputting through the Fiio e07k.

[ubuntu] bluetooth poor signal strength on ubuntu 15.10

Hello,

Since I have upgraded my system from Ubuntu 14.04 to Ubuntu 15.10 I have issues with my bluetooth. I can connect to my wireless headphones only if they are very close (10 cm) to my laptop. As soon as I move them farther away the connection is interrupted and I get the following error messages in syslog:

Code:

bluetoothd[699]: Abort: Connection timed out (110)
acpid: input device has been disconnected, fd 21
bluetoothd[699]: Unable to get Headset Voice gateway SDP record: Host is down

Using blueman I can see that received signal strength is sub-optimal, but I have not idea how to fix this. With Ubuntu 14.04 and the same headphones I had excellent signal quality even at a distance of 5m from my laptop.

Hi !

Following problem, I want to mount a CD, which has AUDIO and a DATA on it. For PC and MAC.

In the file manager, the AUDIO will mount (except that two entries are visible on the file manager),
but the mounting of the DATA part (one entry appear in file manager for this) throws following error:

Error mounting

Quote:

Error mounting /dev/sr0 at /media/istvan/Schritte plus 1: Command-line `mount -t "udf" -o "uhelper=udisks2,nodev,nosuid,uid=1000,gid=1000,io charset=utf8,umask=0077" "/dev/sr0" "/media/istvan/Schritte plus 1"' exited with non-zero exit status 32: mount: block device /dev/sr0 is write-protected, mounting read-onlymount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sr0,
missing codepage or helper program, or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
dmesg | tail or so
this is what Ubuntu tries

Code:

mount -t "udf" -o "uhelper=udisks2,nodev,nosuid,uid=1000,gid=1000,iocharset=utf8,umask=0077" "/dev/sr0" "/media/istvan/Schritte plus 1"
-> how can i mount AUDIO and DATA at once ?

Asus K52Jc suspend/hibernation broken on 15.04, 15.10 workaround found

$

Hello,
I have a problem with my old ASUS K52Jc laptop. On newer linux distributions suspend & hibernation does not work correctly. When I put laptop to sleep everything works as one would expect - but when I woke my computer {hybernation or sleep - does not matter} there is 30-50% chance, that system freeze after showing Login manager (gdm, slim, lightdm...) or terminal login prompt. After spending few evenings investigating (using help provided here https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspend) I found that network driver (jme) is the problem. So I put following into /lib/systemd/system-sleep/remove-jme.sh :
#!/bin/bash
[ "$1" = "post" ] && /sbin/modprobe jme
[ "$1" = "pre" ] && /sbin/modprobe -r jme
exit 0

And suspend started working 100% correctly. {I dont use hibernation very often, so I dont know, if thaw from hibernation would work flawlesly}. But this solution does not work very well for KVM Virtual Machines with bridged virtual net interfaces.

After few months I found that when disable WakeOnLan before suspend using command "ethtool -s eth0 wol d" I always can resume without crash/freeze. This network interfaces WoL is set on g (magic packet) by default after startup (maybee even from POST).

Hibernation is another story - when system boots up, I dont have option to run "ethtool -s eth0 wol d" before system is loaded to RAM from swap, so it freeze on some occasions. But this does not concern me very much - suspend to ram works at least.

I would like to ask, where can I report this bug and hopefully get it fixed :) On Debian 7 wheezy, ubuntu 14.04, antix and other distributions without systemd, sleep and hibernation usually works, but on newer distros with systemd like ubuntu 15.04, 15.10, Debian 8 jessie, fedora 22, manjaro (archlinux) suspending requieres this "ethtools -s eth0 wol d" workaround, so I thing systemd makes something very differently from other init approaches.

Thank you for your help and sorry for my bad English

Printing woes....Or rather lack of printing

Hello all -

I'm running ubuntu 15.04 on a Asus laptop. Everything seems to be working (well the fn brightness didn't but i ended up using - indicator brightness and all is good.) Now my next project is :

Installing a printer.

The setup is as follows - wireless router - Asus RT-N66U. The printer - Brother HL-2140. I've added the printer via system settings / printer/ LPD/LPR / added the ip address and attempted to print out a test page.

When I check the printer status in ubuntu , it says - Held. I've released it but it reverts back to the same thing. I then see a message in the print status window that the printer "may not be connected." Keep in mind i have no issues printing from windows ( from my other laptop or desktop.)

Projector 3D output, HDMI Frame Packing (1920x2205)

Good evening

I'm attempting to get a 3D output to a home projector
The Projector is an Optima 1070X Active 3D Projector using a HDMI 1.4a connection. The Graphics card is a Raedon HD 7970 using the open source drivers.

Here is what I've done and managed so far to force the 3D resolution as shown here. http://hdguru.com/3d-hdtv-and-hdmi-explained/1336/
Using the following commands I've setup the correct resolution (I believe)
Code:

$ cvt 1920 2205 24
# 1920x2205 23.99 Hz (CVT) hsync: 53.70 kHz; pclk: 135.75 MHz

$ xrandr --newmode "1920x2205_24.00"  135.75  1920 2024 2224 2528  2205 2208 2218 2238 -hsync +vsync
$ xrandr --addmode HDMI-0 "1920x2205_24.00"
$ xrandr --output HDMI-0 --mode "1920x2205_24.00"

When doing this, the projector HUD Information shows that it's functioning at 2205x1920 @ 24Hz. The native resolution for this device is 1080x1920. At 2205x1920@24 the projector display just freezes and it increases the internal Fan. Seemingly not positive for the projector.
This projector has been tested through windows using a horrible program called PowerDVD on this computer (dual boot) and this is able to change the projector to 3D and function OK. So on a hardware level, things are suitable it seems.
To do some extra testing, I have a LG TV that supports 3D frame packing through HDMI. So I connected this to the computer and set the output to 2205x1920_24. The TV will change to 3D automatically and works very well.

I get the feeling that some devices will change to 3D Frame packing mode by just the resolution only, while maybe the projector is wanting a 'special packet' to indicate a 3D signal.
Wondering if anyone has any experience in this or any idea's of how I can get this projector in 3D mode through Linux.
The projector can only manually be placed in 3D mode when a 1080p display is been sent (SBS / OU) but this half's the resolution to each eye, which is why I wish to try and use Frame Packing.

Thank you for any feedback
Regards ~

Laptop WiFi Fails to Restart after Resuming from Sleep/Suspend

The network card on a Lenovo Thinkpad X230 laptop was not responding after sleep/suspend. Here's the card info:

description: Wireless interface
product: Centrino Advanced-N 6205 [Taylor Peak]
vendor: Intel Corporation
physical id: 0
bus info: pci@0000:03:00.0

resources: irq:32 memory:f1c00000-f1c01fff

I followed some old solutions found on the forum here and added a "config" file in /etc/pm/config.d/ with the value SUSPEND_MODULES="iwlwifi". This appears to match the driver in use as seen above. However, the problem still occurs randomly. I have to reboot entirely to get wifi to work again, and this is extremely annoying, especially when I'm multitasking with several applications open, and they all have to be restarted.

This only happened after I upgraded to 15.10. (I also had severe problems on another computer after upgrading to 15.10. Seems like an unstable release.) Not sure if it would matter, but I'm using Gnome.

Nvidia GTX 980 + multiple displays

I'm trying to get my desktop machine working with multiple displays. I really need them for work and can't skimp on having a single monitor. Anyways, here is the output for `xrandr -q`:

I need DVI-I-1 and DP-5 to both be at 1920x1080... I've tried a bunch of stuff but I'm not really great at figuring this out as it's been awhile since I've used Ubuntu desktop and a lot has changed since then. Please let me know how I can help provide the information needed to debug this together. 1 monitor (that works) is HDMI and the other 2 that are connected are both Display Ports; no matter what I do, they're unrecognized and won't go past 800x600 resolution...

Thanks in advance!!!
