Hi folks, new user Arturo here.
I'm running Ubuntu 16.04 LTS and have just purchased an HP Laser Jet Pro MFP M227fdw. I've got the printer running using an ethernet cable connection, but can't seem to get it to detect the scanner.
I've tried installing the hplip program and the sane find scanner. Below is the error message I've received:
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Arturo

Nvidia driver with a laptop video card with custom firmware.

Hello I installed Ubuntu 17.04 on a Clevo laptop with a GTX 970m and it has been flashed with custom firmware to allow overclocking.
When I used this laptop and video card under Windows, the only driver that I could use was a custom driver provided by Sager that has a custom device id list.
When I use lspci command to look at my video cards info, the results look familiar to what I was using under the Sager driver.
How ever when I switch from nouveau to the Nvidia driver under proprietary drivers, the Nvidia driver does not seem to be engaging.
The Nvidia settings app is empty, and running the Heaven benchmark app provides same results under both drivers.
I am pretty sure that what needs to happen for me with Ubuntu with the Nvidia driver is similar to what I have to do with Windows, the driver needs the correct device (under windows the driver has a list of device ids in a inf file) id to be able to install correctly.
But so far I'm having trouble finding out exactly what I need to do to get the Nvidia driver in Ubuntu to work correctly with my customized video card.

Any help will be appreciated!
Thank you,
Jonathan Duncan.

[lubuntu] MDADM vs fakeRAID on old PC

Hi, I have a local media server which runs Lubuntu 16. It's an old PC, Intel Pentium 4. and I run out of space in the storage I found that linux has MDADM to create RAID Array.. Well, I'm thinking that software is too hard for my Intel Pentium 4 to handle.. so, i was searching cheap RAID hardware.. but, some people on internet said cheap RAID hardware isn't a great idea.. and a wiki says linux software raid is recommended over fakeRAID/cheap RAID hardware.. and the biggest problem is i don't know if that cheap RAID hardware would work or not on my local media server.. what's your opinion?
i still have to buy a card whatever the option is.. and there is 3 options:
1. buy SATA expansion card for MDADM to create RAID
2. buy fakeRAID / cheap RAID hardware to create RAID
3. buy SATA expansion card to add partition and NOT creating RAID (only if creating RAID on my server is a bad idea)
Note: i already have unused HDDs, that's why i won't buy new HDD
Thank you

A problem with NVidia driver after updating KUbuntu 14.04

Hello!
After I updated my KUbuntu 14.04.5 LTS with 'aptitude safe-upgrade' and restarted my machine I did not see the graphical login screen. Console login screen appeared for a shot time period and then the screen became completely black.
I am not expert in Ubuntu, so I googled a bit and did all the steps of the instruction on how to repair the machine after installing some restricted NVidia drivers. Fortunately it helped, and now I am able to log in and looks like all the UI functionality works, but at the same time UI is significantly slowed down, and I have an impression that some kind of hardware acceleration is switched off. If I run an application that renders real-time data with OpenGL, all the applications start to work very slow. Also I noticed that there is a process 'compiz' that consumes 5 - 50% CPU depending on how many UI applications are started.

Hey guys,

I'm a relatively new user to Ubuntu. I got my MSI laptop to dual boot windows and ubuntu around two months ago. Recently, I've started to notice that the battery life on my laptop is very short when I boot into Ubuntu and I've been looking at various forums for a fix but still haven't found one that helps yet.

I appreciate any kind of help/tips. Please let me know if I should provide anymore information (this is my first time posting in a forum about anything tech related)

Thanks in advance!

I've not been able to scan with my new multi function HP. Printing works just fine, but I've not been able to get hplip to run.
I've downloaded the most recent version, but when I try to run the program, I receive an error message saying there are "text errors" in the program.
Has anyone had any success in scanning with this particular model?

Thanks,
Art

[ubuntu] working with & oveclocking AMD GPUs

$

Hi,

I started working with AMD GPUs on an ubuntu server for computational purposes. I'm trying to figure out how to make them work efficiently and also how to overclock them. I have had good results with nVidia cards in this respect, but my results with AMD are not that good. I'll compare results with nVidia here and then, where nVidia experiences are with the same motherboard.

I've tried ubuntu 17.04 and also 16.04 LTS. the results are similar. the specific examples below come from 16.04 LTS, as it is said that AMD supports LTS only.

Any pointers below appreciated.

I have an ASRock H81 Pro BTC 2.0 motherboard with 6 ASUS AMD RX 580 cards connected. All cards show up as expected. I also see them through the /sys/class/drm/cardX/device interface:

Code:

2: 1750Mhz *
0: 300Mhz *
1: 1000Mhz
2: 1750Mhz

the above are displayed when the cards are under computational load.

as you see, the cards are not really putting out peak performance. also, the cards behave differently, although the load on them is the same.

most notably:

1. card1 is on an x8 PCI connection, while all others are on x16:

Code:

$ cat /sys/class/drm/card[1-6]/device/pp_dpm_pcie
0: 2.5GB, x8 *
1: 5.0GB, x16
0: 2.5GB, x8
1: 5.0GB, x16 *
0: 2.5GB, x8
1: 5.0GB, x16 *
0: 2.5GB, x8
1: 5.0GB, x16 *
0: 2.5GB, x8
1: 5.0GB, x16 *
0: 2.5GB, x8
1: 5.0GB, x16 *

and I don't see the way to change this. as a result, card1 operates significantly (about 4 times) slower. on the same motherboard, there are no such issues with nVidia. I don't see any option to set this bus speed in the BIOS. it's also strange that the x16 option is there, but it's still x8 for card1, while x16 for all others. (one can't just "echo 1 > pp_dpm_pcie", it's not a read-write interface)

2. memory and GPU clock speeds are inconsistent

see above for the pp_dpm_sclk and pp_dpm_mclk outputs. again, card1 behaves strangely in the sense that no * (indication) appears beside the memory clock readings. also, while all cards are under computational load, some have a 300MHz memory clock, while others 1750MHz. I'd prefer to set this to 1750MHz, for all of them.

3. I've tried to use ROC-smi from AMD: https://github.com/RadeonOpenCompute/ROC-smi , but it's not really giving good results.

Code:

$ ./rocm-smi

note: card0 is the built-in motherboard card

note that it can't read card1 GPU and clock speeds either.

moreover, if I try ti set anything, the cards will somehow reconfigure and reduce their computing capacity. basically using ROC-smi will somehow put the cards into some minimal configuration state. totally not what one would expect.

I also tried amdcovc: https://github.com/matszpk/amdcovc - with similarly bad results.

needless to say, nvidia-smi works with nVidia cards on the same motherboard fine (with the caveat that it needs an X server running on each card)

can any one point me into directions I can make these cards work? get card1 to work on an x16 bus? set memory clocks explicitly?

as you see, it's not even at the point of overclocking at first, at first I just want to get these cards to work properly.

(Ubuntu 16.04) Blackscreen after installing AMDGPU-PRO drivers R9 380X

I have ubuntu 16.04 installed with a R9 380X gfx card. I installed the latest AMDGPU-PRO driver but after the install every time i reboot the screen goes offline for about 10-13 seconds, the gpu fans spin to 100% (i fix this with a script i found on github ) but still is this normal? also i dont actually know if ubuntu uses this driver. After 10-13 seconds as i mentioned before the system boots normally with the correct resolution but i get this output:

Code:

lspci -k | grep -EA2 'VGA|3D'

Kernel driver in use: amdgpu

Does this mean the driver doesnt work like it should? i suppose maybe the system tries to use the AMDGPU-PRO and falls back to the old driver i had ?

Code:

dpkg -l amdgpu-pro

I also added my user to video group.

Anyone knows how to fix this? amdgpu-pro driver is better than the stock driver ubuntu comes with?

Thanks!

Printer Driver Issue

$

i have an issue with a printer driver in the new version of Linux Mint and they suggested I ask if any Ubuntu users have the same issue to see if the problem is the driver or Linux Mint.

My printer is a Canon iX6820. The driver was downloaded from Canon as the recommended driver for Ubuntu. It works flawlessly in linux Mint 17.3 but not the newer version, 18.2.

Here's the problem. I have a checklist created in LibreOffice Writer that is multiple columns on a landscape legal size page. When it prints from a saved .odt, .doc, or .docx file, it prints part of it sideways at the top of the page so only the center section of the text prints. My scanner won't scan a legal document so these files are shortened a bit but the part dropped off is only blank paper and you can still see what it's doing.

If I save it as a .pdf and print it, it shrinks the whole list so it fits sideways on a legal page, still oriented 'portrait' although the document is set to 'landscape'.
Document1.jpgDocument2.jpg

I've tried every possible setting on the printer for landscape & portrait both in each print job or in printer defaults. All other Writer files, print fine but they aren't oriented 'landscape'. This file printed fine on this computer when I had mint 17.3 on it and the same driver installed.

The issue is not a corrupted file because I created a whole new document using text boxes instead of columns and the result is the same (that's the document in the photos).

I can put the file on a flash drive and print it fine on my wife's computer still with Mint 17.3 Cinnamon.

Thanks for any input on this. RG

Hi,
My Acer ES1-531 laptop has a Synaptics touchpad driver and it acts extremely erratic after about an hour of use or less.

Using the OpenSource drivers with Nvidia graphics

I purchased a Dell Inspiron 15 7559 gaming laptop (http://www.dell.com/en-us/work/shop/...ai157w10ph5716 or http://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/produ...15-7559-laptop). It has a Nvidia 960M graphics card in it, and I have had little to no luck getting it to work. I can use the proprietary drivers if I can get it to boot, but any attempt to have it only use the Intel graphics to save battery when I am not running a game causes a lockup. Not even the keyboard leds will respond, so the problem is not just visual. I could just leave it with the Nvidia drivers and set it to use the discrete card all the time, but with how buggy it is already and the fact that Nvidia's drivers get worse over time (or so I'm told), I would like to get the nouveau drivers working.

It uses Optimus, so my chances are already bad, and it tends not to boot with the same lockup problem if I don't have the Nvidia drivers enabled. Still, I think the card is at least partially supported by nouveau (from the feature matrix at https://nouveau.freedesktop.org/wiki/FeatureMatrix/), so how do I get it to work with the nouveau drivers (although, some of it is WIP'd. That might be it...) and whatever the catch-of-the-day card switching application is?

My other option is either dealing with this thing's issues or trying to trade it in for an AMD graphics laptop (the one HP Omen looks nice, and the card is in the list for the Radeon driver).

Which Light Ubuntu Distro should I install on this Laptop ?

My laptop Specs are :

Intel Celeron N3060 Dual-core (2 Core) 1.60 GHz

4 GB DDR3L SDRAM

64 GB SSD

1366 x 768 - Intel HD Graphics 400

so, I want a light Ubuntu Distro with a desktop Environment that is based on GTK ...
I had my mind set on Lubuntu at first, but heard that they are switching to LXQT so with that out of the way I have two options :

Ubuntu MATE &
Xubuntu

which one is the lighter one ...and what would be your recommendation considering the Specs of my laptop ? Is my laptop able to handle both of these distros ? if so, I prefer MATE....what do you think ?

Many Thanks

The CPU isn't a Xeon though, it's an i5-3570K

Lastly, both displays are functional and have the desktop being output to them. At the moment, I have a mirrored setup, but Screen Display in the settings shows single "Built-in Display" with no option to add a second one.

If there's any other information that I can provide I'd be more than happy to. I just have no idea what this issue is related to and I'm thinking that my GPU my simply be gone caputz at this point. It's a few years old.

If I connect it to my pc with ubuntu 14.04 you will see all the folders and files. To get into the disk when connected to the router I go to Files-Connect with a server-examine-comtrend-usb1_1, and from there I can do whatever I want with the files and folders that are seen, which are not all. Also say that I entered the router and I put a password to access the disk from the browser and could only see the files and folders, in this case if that was everything.
