m.2 nmve (pcie) dirves are substantially faster than m.2 sata ssd. However, on the e7270, only 2 of the 4 memory channels are allowed reducing the performance of the nmve ssd.
Will I get much of a performance boost by switching out the sata ssd?

I am about to build a new machine with 64 bit Ubuntu.
Is it better to use an AMD or Intel processor?
I visit a web site that recently stopped supporting Firefox and Google Chrome only supports 64 bit Linux.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. Also memory size or other considerations.
Thanks,
Mike

I cant get the 3tb drive to work in either OS, it will only partiton and format for 7 or 10.
win7 has the 2TB limit, so has to be formatted gpt. Then works fine. But putting that drive in win10, win 10 cant use the partition made by win7 at all. It has to be cleaned with diskpart and setup as gpt in win10, AND then it wont work in win7.
So was wondering if gparted can make it work for both OS.
It worked, I used livemint usb. It partitioned as gpt, then I selected ntfs. Works in win10 and win7.
The windows partitoner could not make it work.

I have been trying to solve this problem for a few months now. I have an external monitor that I have been using for some time and for some reason has stopped working with my Ubuntu machine.
I posted before in an earlier thread but got no replies (
https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2371551).
I recently re-imaged my PC with Ubuntu 17.10 in the hopes it would clear any issues preventing the previous installation from malfunctioning, but to no avail.
Could really use some help. Thanks in advance.

One question, I have used this old computer strictly to muddle with old MUD servers for 7 or 8 years now, but to this day, and using old Fedora, then got into Ubuntu 8ish, and now I am currently running Lubuntu 16, I have never been able to get the audio to work except in Windows. In windows Hardware Manager, it shows ¨Realtek AC97 Audio¨ for the drivers. With Lubuntu now running smoothly and stock again, any suggestions on how to tackle this? Everything I have researched points to
Quote:
It should work Realtek AC97 was incorporated in 2005
which unfortunity dosnt solve the issue.
Any other information I will be happy to post,
Joe.

Hi all,
I would like to know how to debug this problem. After upgrade to 17.10, my laptop trackpad does not work on gnome3 session. I mean, i still can move the pointer, but can't click on anything. I've searched about on google, and some threads suggested me to replace synaptics to libinput. I removed synaptics, but does not solve anything. I tested on the console, using gpm and trackpad click work well. What more can I do to try to solve this?
Thanks in advance for all help.

I work for a large computer manufacturing giant, and we handle mostly the business side of things (not consumer). The training we are provided with is strictly Windows and very little to no Linux troubleshooting at all. I am looking for material on how to better troubleshoot hardware like motherboard, memory, HDD, USB and Video to determine what it's defect is and why it failed to load during boot. Our scope is within Ubuntu strictly, but we have very little material on it. I feel like I am the only one in the center who has working knowledge in terminal and how to navigate it but not familiar with the troubleshooting portion. Any white papers or focus would greatly help. Thank you!

Hello all!
I have 4 PCs DDR3 1333Mhz Ram stick, and 3 of them are faulty.
If I can record the bad addresses with memtest86+, is it possible with ubuntu 17.10 to exclude the problematic parts?
BadRam module is complied into the stock kernel?
I have bad addresses at :

25F5A1768, Expected: 00200000, Actual: 00000000

Is it good this way?

Hello. I have a laptop with an ATI VGA, Radeon open source driver and Arch Linux. I installed this package:
https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/chromium-vaapi/and
and hardware acceleration works fine in chromium.
Then I have another laptop with another ATI VGA, same Radeon open source driver and Lubuntu 16.04 LTS.
chromium-browser does not have hardware acceleration support, by default chromium has not enabled it on Linux. But there's this patch
https://chromium-review.googlesource...m/src/+/532294
that enables VAAPI hardware acceleration inside the browser on Linux.
The package above for Arch Linux works well and I tried to find something similar for Lubuntu. There's this PPA:
https://launchpad.net/~saiarcot895/+...u/chromium-dev
It provides chromium-dev with the same patch.
I installed it, but hardware acceleration does not work.
Could you help me to find the solution?
Maybe it's an issue in libva to get VAAPI working. I could provide tests and logs from terminal if you can collaborate.
Thanks.

I upgraded my graphics card to a card I found that would work with 16.04 and AMDGPU-PRO. I installed the card and the new drivers according to AMD's instructions and the symptoms began by locking up the computer when the login screen appeared. I can get everything to work with "nomodeset" specified, but then of course I don't get any 3D acceleration. I tried remove/install xorg-xserver and now I've lost any configuration for X and X -configure now tells me "No devices to configure."
So the short version is that by trying to fix it, I have made it much worse. I have a lot of time in configuring this environment and would like to rescue it instead of reinstalling. I'm not new to Linux, but I am quite stuck at this point. Any help appreciated.
The system is presently booting into low graphics mode. I have command prompt access only, so it's hard to copy the log files into a browser.

HI.... I need a new laptop and have thought about purchasing a
Thinkpad E470. From looking around on the forums and online I have noticed that some people have had problems with this device. Mainly with wifi and the trackpoint. Anyway I could not find out if these both work correctly now on Ubuntu / Linux in general. Could someone confirm for me if that is still the case, or if wifi would work on this device ??
FYI: I actually haven't bought a laptop in 10+ years so picking a new laptop has been somewhat hard. I plan to use my new laptop for web development, work in android studio and playing the likes of Team Fortress 2 via steam. If you think that a different thinkpad would better suit my needs then please let me know because like I said choosing a new laptop has been somewhat hard.
Many thanks for your time and for replying........

Hello, i had broken my laptop's screen so i bought a new one, i've installed it and then this strange thing happend:
The screen dont works in uefi ! I dont mean in the OS , i mean in the options menu (graphical-bios) nor at the post before boot.So if i have uefi on, i press the power button , the screen remains black till grub bootloader ends it's counting and loads OS (i have dual boot windows and ubuntu 16.04). But the strange thing is that when it loads the OS the screen works perfectly there.
Furthermore the most strange thing is that if i change the uefi to csm (connect secondary screen via rgb so i can see what i m doing)i restart and the monitor worka there perfectly, i can see everything.(it boot obviously because my partitions are for uefi). I haven't seen anything like that before. Is the uefi option missing my screen's drivers or something? How can i fix it? While on uefi and no screen , in the uefi settings, i have tried every possible option for screen like (auto or internal lcd etc.) My uefi settings have very few options because it's ami based custom firmware by Toshiba.
thanks in advance.
ps motherboard is toshiba zbwaa and the laptop is toshiba-c50-b-14h (celeron n2830 baytrail)

I dual-installed Ubuntu 16.04 onto an HP Spectre X360 convertible 13-acOXX with Windows 10 two weeks ago. I'm new to Linux.
I noticed yesterday that my hard drive has somehow changed from an SDA to NVME. I definitely have an SSD drive not HDD. I don't know if this is related but when I logged into Windows instead of Linux I found that Windows is now very slow and more irritating to use than it was when I started using Ubuntu.
When I ran sudo lshw I couldn't find any hard drive in the list.This could be my inexperience, but there was nothing that I could recognize as a drive.
I also checked /dev, lsblk and mount as well as
Disks in the GUI and the drive is NVME.
Any ideas about what I've done or what has happened and how to fix it?
Thanks,
Debbie

Just finished installing 16.04 64-bit on an old system that previously had 12.04 32-bit. Under 12.04 the mouse worked normally (Logitech M705), but since the upgrade the sensitivity seems to be twice as much horizontally as vertically, rendering it difficult to use. I'm guessing it's because I'm using dual monitors, but this wasn't an issue before. I just spent the last hour reading about synaptics and conf files and horiz/vert scrolling options, but I know very little when it comes to anything regarding hardware interaction, and I'm at a loss of how to fix this issue (or apparently even describe it, unless I'm literally the only person who's ever run into this).

I too have an audiobox USB. This works perfectly in Windows 10. As the user in the example thread stated he found out that the usb cable is bad - I tried a different cable and experienced the same symptom.Could this be an incompatibility problem with my kernel? For the record I'm using Debian - but hey it's the same thing pretty much.
Code:
Linux j-St4tion 4.9.0-4-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 4.9.51-1 (2017-09-28) x86_64 GNU/Linux

m.2 nmve (pcie) dirves are substantially faster than m.2 sata ssd. However, on the e7270, only 2 of the 4 memory channels are allowed reducing the performance of the nmve ssd.
Will I get much of a performance boost by switching out the sata ssd?

Hi, we have one of these 16-way serial hubs:
https://www.startech.com/uk/Cards-Ad...b~ICUSB23216FD
Unfortunately we're having a lot of trouble getting the ttyUSB ports to stick, they seem to change at random. For instance this is the current situation:
Code:
$ ls /dev/ttyUSB*
/dev/ttyUSB0 /dev/ttyUSB10 /dev/ttyUSB12 /dev/ttyUSB14 /dev/ttyUSB16 /dev/ttyUSB4 /dev/ttyUSB6 /dev/ttyUSB8
/dev/ttyUSB1 /dev/ttyUSB11 /dev/ttyUSB13 /dev/ttyUSB15 /dev/ttyUSB2 /dev/ttyUSB5 /dev/ttyUSB7 /dev/ttyUSB9
You can see that instead of ttyUSB[0-15], which it started with when PC was rebooted 3 days ago, it is already changed to ttyUSB[0-16] with ttyUSB3 now missing.
I tried some udev rules like so:
Code:
# udev rules for startech 16-way usb-serial hub
# udevadm info -a
# ttyUSB[0-15]

This isn't working properly though, and only gives me partial results, and might not even help in the event of a ttyUSB port being randomly reassigned:
Code:
~$ ls -lrt /dev/startech*
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 8 Nov 14 11:43 /dev/startech10 -> ttyUSB10
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 7 Nov 14 11:43 /dev/startech0 -> ttyUSB0
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 7 Nov 14 11:43 /dev/startech9 -> ttyUSB9

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 8 Nov 14 11:43 /dev/startech13 -> ttyUSB13
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 8 Nov 14 11:43 /dev/startech11 -> ttyUSB11
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 7 Nov 14 11:43 /dev/startech1 -> ttyUSB1
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 8 Nov 14 11:43 /dev/startech14 -> ttyUSB14
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 8 Nov 14 11:43 /dev/startech12 -> ttyUSB12
~$
I've attached output of udevadm on my ttyUSB ports. Any help please would be greatly appreciated.

I just did a fresh install of 16.04.3, Unity environment and kernel 4.10.0-38-generic. My laptop is a Dell XPS 1350 and I have attached the DA100 adaptor to connect to my VGA monitor at work.
Problem: the desktop behavior in the external monitor is very sluggish, mouse flickers, a general sense of things done slowly :)
Some info:
1. DLM service is up and running
Code:
● dlm.service - DisplayLink Manager Service
Loaded: loaded (/lib/systemd/system/dlm.service; enabled; vendor preset: enabled)
Active: active (running) since Mo 2017-11-20 14:07:50 CET; 23min ago
Process: 1372 ExecStartPre=/bin/sh -c modprobe evdi || (dkms install evdi/1.4.210 && modprobe evdi) (code=exited, status=0/SUCCESS)
Main PID: 1375 (DisplayLinkMana)
CGroup: /system.slice/dlm.service
└─1375 /opt/displaylink/DisplayLinkManager
Nov 20 14:07:50 xps systemd[1]: Starting DisplayLink Manager Service...
Nov 20 14:07:50 xps systemd[1]: Started DisplayLink Manager Service.
Nov 20 14:07:50 xps systemd[1]: Started DisplayLink Manager Service.
2. Output of
xrandr --listproviders
Code:
Providers: number : 2
Provider 0: id: 0x49 cap: 0x9, Source Output, Sink Offload crtcs: 4 outputs: 6 associated providers: 1 name:Intel
Provider 1: id: 0x12b cap: 0x2, Sink Output crtcs: 1 outputs: 1 associated providers: 1 name:modesetting
What I've done so far to troubleshoot the problem is to add the file
20-displaylink.conf into my
/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/ folder containing:
Code:
Section "Device"
Identifier "Intel"
Driver "intel"
Option "VSync" "false"
EndSection
This in fact allowed me to get at least a display in the external monitor since previously I was getting just a frozen screen.
THE WEIRD PART: the exact same setup was working like a charm on a previous kernel. I think it was 4.9.xxx. Any ideas?

I have 4 printers. Three are installed and working. I just purchased a Canon TS9020. It is not in the Network database for Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (my main OS) It is there in Ubuntu 17.10 running on my test computer. For what ever it is worth the entire printer module in Ubuntu 17.10 is a mess along with other problems. I will be scared to upgrade my 16.04 LTS to 18.04 LTS next April.
My main issue is how to use my new Canon Pixma TS9020 in Ubuntu 16.04 LTS..
Also my Brother MFC8890DW scanner has never worked. And no driver for Wacom Intuos Pro. Sourceforge is too confusing for me. Ubuntu needs the equivalent of an .exe file to install these things.
