[lubuntu] Lubuntu 18.10 cannot talk to Nvidia GeForce 940MX

$

This experience has been so frustrating, I created an account just to ask for help.

My Lubuntu version is 18.10.
My GPU is apparently a "GM108M [GeForce 940MX]" (from Nvidia)
I have tried everything from "get an installer from the Nvidia website" to "find an open-source alternative". Nothing is working.

The following is the shell output from when I type "sudo ubuntu-drivers autoinstall", the most intuitive solution.

Code:

sudo ubuntu-drivers autoinstallReading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
The following additional packages will be installed:
  libnvidia-cfg1-390 libnvidia-common-390 libnvidia-compute-390

Other things that are probably important for finding a solution (as far as I know):
  • Secure boot is turned off
  • I have another GPU, and it's some Intel thing.
  • My laptop is a Lenovo Flex (called a Yoga in Europe), but you probably figured part of that out from the dump above.

Please respond (with either questions or suggestions; anything to move this forward), and thank you.

[ubuntu] could not detect the target printer

I'm trying to install a Canon printer on 18.04. From a Canon website, I downloaded and installed the driver package, called cnijfilter2-5.50-1-deb. The driver installed successfully, but when it came to registering the printer, I got "could not detect the target printer". I'm attempting a USB connection, and I have no reason to think that anything is physically wrong with the connection. Any ideas? Thanks.

Screen flickering - Acer Switch 5

Hi Friendly Ubuntu Users!

This problem has been dogging me for about 10 months now. The problem comes and goes but lately it has been worse so it is time to post and seek help.

I have an Acer Switch 5 which is a touch screen laptop. The screen has been flickering on me. Sometimes to the point that the computer is unusable. But normally it is tolerable.

I have tried mostly used Ubuntu 19.04 and more recently 19.10 but I have also tried Linux Mint (most recent) and the same thing happens. This is a video I took showing what it is like with Linux Mint but it is the same with Ubuntu. Mint is based on Ubuntu, so this is not surprising.

It is not always this bad.

I don't know a lot about the hardware, but this is what lspci shows:

I suspect I have a driver issue. The Additional Drivers tab in Software and Updates does not show a proprietary driver available.

I have no idea if I had the issues with stock Windows because I went straight to a dedicated Ubuntu install.

It only affects the built in touch screen. The external monitor is fine via the USB C port.

Looking for any tips on things I can try.

Thanks!

Brother printer "Processing - Waiting for printer to become available."

Hello everyone :)
apologies in advance if this is "one of those" questions....
I'm still at newbie level, I tend to not touch things unless they don't work, and they mostly work - until now.

The printer will not print.
Ubuntu sees it and shows it as "Brother HL-1110 series" in Printers in the Admin menu.
Properties shows it with a green tick and Printer State: Idle

But when I try to print something or click on "print test page", the status changes to "Waiting for printer to become available."

Please help - I've tried almost nothing and I'm out of ideas............

oh, what have I tried?
power cycling both the printer and the computer.
I've tried having the printer powered up before rebooting the computer, and also power cycling the printer while the computer is still running.

All help appreciated - I need to print out my resume [because... reasons...]
:)

Ubuntu 19.10 + MSI GE60 - Webcam not recognized

Hi all,

I recently installed Ubuntu 19.10 on a MSI GE60 Apache Pro laptop and, while it works great and all devices are recognized, I found the following issue:

If I boot directly on Ubuntu, the OS can't find the webcam. If I run lsusb -t, I get this:
Code:

thisuser@MSI-GE60-2PE:~$ lsusb -t
/:  Bus 04.Port 1: Dev 1, Class=root_hub, Driver=xhci_hcd/6p, 5000M
/:  Bus 03.Port 1: Dev 1, Class=root_hub, Driver=xhci_hcd/14p, 480M
/:  Bus 02.Port 1: Dev 1, Class=root_hub, Driver=ehci-pci/2p, 480M
    |__ Port 1: Dev 2, If 0, Class=Hub, Driver=hub/8p, 480M
        |__ Port 4: Dev 3, If 0, Class=Human Interface Device, Driver=usbhid, 12M
/:  Bus 01.Port 1: Dev 1, Class=root_hub, Driver=ehci-pci/2p, 480M
    |__ Port 1: Dev 2, If 0, Class=Hub, Driver=hub/6p, 480M
        |__ Port 1: Dev 3, If 0, Class=Human Interface Device, Driver=usbhid, 1.5M

        |__ Port 3: Dev 4, If 1, Class=Wireless, Driver=btusb, 12M

Running v4l2-ctl --all returns this:
Code:

thisuser@MSI-GE60-2PE:~$ v4l2-ctl --all
Cannot open device /dev/video0

However, if I first boot on Windows and open the MSI control panel application (MSI SCM) and enable the webcam from there, I can reboot into Ubuntu and this time the webcam is recognized and I can use it normally:
Code:

thisuser@MSI-GE60-2PE:~$ lsusb -t
/:  Bus 04.Port 1: Dev 1, Class=root_hub, Driver=xhci_hcd/6p, 5000M

        |__ Port 4: Dev 5, If 1, Class=Video, Driver=uvcvideo, 480M

Code:

thisuser@MSI-GE60-2PE:~$ v4l2-ctl --all

Any ideas how can I make Ubuntu recognize the webcam without having to boot into Windows first? I've looked at the BIOS but I can't find anything specific to the webcam, and I'm not sure if editing any of the USB options would make a difference.

Thanks in advance!

Hello everyone, since a floppy drive was installed on a Dell Inspiron 540, I have been using it to read old floppy drives I have lying about. However in regards to being able to successfully write to the disk, I keep getting into the issue that the entire drive is owned by root, making it impossible to successfully write to it without invoking root access. How can I get my floppy drive to be used by normal users.

Has anyone been able to sort out the ALPS touchpad in Ubuntu? I have tried a couple of different builds of Ubuntu and in fact other distros of Linux as well and I sill have the same problem.

The touchpad is recognised just fine, but it jutters (jumps) this is particular worse when using the scroll bar or when I go to click on a link, the cursor will start juttering up and down.

I have tried the psmouse download and the Synaptics touchpad as well and neither one works.

I have now tried both xserver-xorg-input-libinput and xserver-xorg-input-synaptics.

i have a fujitsu lifebook P1610D, and i got the touch screen working by just attaching it as an input device, but now i cant figure out how to calibrate it. i installed xinput_calibrator, ran it with output type auto, and it gave me some text that i am supposed to paste into '/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/99-calibration.conf' but when i go into /etc/x11, there is no folder called xorg.conf.d, so where do i put the config data that xinput_calibrator gave me?

I have just bought a dock Dell TB16 to connect to my laptop Dell XPS13 9370; dock installing instructions recommend to update BIOS and drivers before to connect the dock to the laptop but on www.dell.com there are no drivers for Ubuntu and only a Windows file(!) (XPS_9370_1.11.1.exe) for BIOS update...
I tried to connect the dock anyway but nothing works, no mouse, no keyboard, no wired network...
Any suggestion? Did anyone get this problem?
Thank you for help.

I have a recent 3 TB WD usb hard drive (no SSD) which after having worked perfectly for 3 months as a daily backup disk, now get stuck during rsync backup.
I wanted to check the disk integrity with the Disks utility but the menu option "SMART Data & Self-Test..." is grayed out and no disk check is possible.
It looks the Disks app has some problem because even the internal system disk has the same problem...
What's the matter? How can I check my disk?

[ubuntu] Inspiron 5547 brightness keys problem

Hello! I've installed Ubuntu 19.10 on my Dell inspiron 5547 and I'm facing a problem with the brightness keys of the laptop. When I try to use them, the computer become too slow, the cpu fan increases its speed and the keyboard freezes, sometimes returning to work after a while, or it simply freezes completely and I need to reboot the computer. But if I try to change the brightness using the slider of the interface, works pretty fine. The sound control keys are working normally.

Hi,

I am using a Logitech G610 and every single time I restart my machine the sound output device ALWAYS changes it back to HDMI and I have to change it to head headphones or line out for the speakers.
Almost every single day I get rather annoying after starting up my PC I change the volume with the big knob on the keyboard but it doesnt work since it went back to HDMI output.

Anyone have solution for me? This is drives me crazy almost every day.

I am using 19.04

[all variants] Suitable Chromebook for any distro?

I searched for "Chromebook" in this forum and did not identify much. The Acer C720 seems to be a favorite but, I prefer to get a newer machine. In performing Internet searches for "best chromebooks for linux" many results are obtained but I have to be skeptical about these unless members of this community can substantiate what I will refer to as the claims these websites make. I found it interesting that the C720P is still referred to:

https://platypusplatypus.com/chromeb...oks-for-linux/

If this is a feasible goal I will pursue it. It is a little challenging to convey a list of features I would like to obtain becaase I have even noticed a 1366 x 768 touchscreen can look good if covered with a nice glass. The 11.6" C720p may have been well regarded for its abilities but, this is a bit small. This is an idea for my son and he does like the touchscreen.

Trying to install WiFi Drivers, got weird error.

EDIT: Just realized this isn't much of an issue as I just realized this is a bit overkill so I stuck with the out-of-the-box drivers.

I am trying to install more compatible drivers for my WiFi, which worked OK out of the box, but not as good as it could have. Ubuntu recommended I installed backport-iwlwifi-dkms so I did via apt. While installing, it seemed to error out in the console log and referenced this log file.

The only error I see in the log file is:
Code:

cc1: some warnings being treated as errors
 make[9]: *** [scripts/Makefile.build:290:  /var/lib/dkms/backport-iwlwifi/7906/build/drivers/net/wireless/intel/iwlwifi/mvm/utils.o]  Error 1

I don't exactly know what this means, but with my minor C experience it seems more like a warning than an error, and I don't know if this prevented it from fully compiling or not. Am I safe to reboot my system and use this driver/module?

Browsing on Firefox and on upper left corner of my screen "crashes".
Time to time on upper left corner shows up orange squares and other colors mixed in them as well.
I bought this laptop about 6 months ago and since I bought it has happened to me. It depends along the day. the problem happens every hour, every 10-15 minutes, it really depends on the day.
When I bought this laptop, I already install Ubuntu, and tested on manjaro as well. The problem happened in both distributions.
Even in external monitors
Does anyone has an idea of what that can be?

Delayed graphic card activation at startup

I apologize for the bizarre title...couldn't think of a different way to state the problem.

I installed Lubuntu 18.04 on a Dell XPS Studio. Startup worked fine...saw the Dell splash screen, then the GRUB menu (it's a dual boot with Windows 10). I then installed a Radeon x300se graphics card so I could use two monitors. Everything appears to be great except there is a delay in the graphics card being activated. Here is what happens....I start the PC, monitor is in Power Save mode....and stays there until about the time the GRUB menu loads. I am thinking the integrated card might be active until then. I have used both this card and a NVIDIA card (that has the same issue in another PC) with Lubuntu 16.04 and it didn't have this problem.

I would be grateful for any thoughts and/or suggestions.
