I am using a slightly older laptop with a hybrid config AMD A10 with 8750G GPU. I've had a variety of issues with this config across many OS' but can usually find a way around it.
I believe it has a damaged or poorly configured temperature monitor as I have had this issue carry across from Windows 10 (however on Win10 or 8 I can fairly easily work around it).
Using sensors-detect I am getting:
radeon-pci-0100
Adapter: PCI adapter
temp1: N/A (crit = +120.0°C, hyst = +90.0°C)
asus-isa-0000
Adapter: ISA adapter
cpu_fan: 2500 RPM
temp1: +6280.0°C
radeon-pci-0008
Adapter: PCI adapter
temp1: +42.0°C (crit = +120.0°C, hyst = +90.0°C)
k10temp-pci-00c3
Adapter: PCI adapter
temp1: +42.2°C (high = +70.0°C)
(crit = +97.0°C, hyst = +96.0°C)
Now obviously it is not actually 6280 degrees celcius as that would be hotter than our sun :)
This laptop only needs to run another month or two while I wait on my new hardware to arrive for my new build so I am not looking to make hardware changes for it, but I have put fresh thermal compound and cleaned dust from vents and fans.
Is there a way I can turn off the auto shutdown of the CPU based on temp? I know its not overheating. It is cool to the touch when it does a hard shut down during a video, or under heavy loads.
Thanks in advance
Edit: I suppose I also am wondering why it would turn on at all at this temperature and why it only does a hard shut down under heavy load?

I have a Getac X500 laptop with i5 M520 CPU and Intel HD Graphics.
Code:

Code:
glxinfo | grep OpenGL
OpenGL vendor string: Intel Open Source Technology Center
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI Intel(R) Ironlake Mobile
OpenGL version string: 2.1 Mesa 19.0.8
OpenGL shading language version string: 1.20
OpenGL extensions:
OpenGL ES profile version string: OpenGL ES 2.0 Mesa 19.0.8
OpenGL ES profile shading language version string: OpenGL ES GLSL ES 1.0.16
OpenGL ES profile extensions:
With win10 the performance was fine, but Win10 broke after the 2016 version, so i thought to put Linux on it to get some more life out of it.
The performance is horrible, but i believe this is primarily HD Graphics related.
The only info i can seem to find suggests using Intel drivers, but that seems to be for much older versions of ubuntu and have dependency problems now.

I am ready to order the parts for my new build. One question remains. Will it be Linux compatible?
MSI B450 TOMAHAWK MAX AM4 AMD B450 SATA 6Gb/s ATX AMD Motherboard
AMD RYZEN 3 3200G 4-Core 3.6 GHz (4.0 GHz Max Boost) Socket AM4 65W YD3200C5FHBOX Desktop Processor
Any insight into this will be greatly appreciated.

I recently built my first computer and I'm having trouble with Linux registering all the my 16gb RAM. It currently only registers half of that. I read all the forums and still can't find a solution. The BIOS recognizes 16gb, so it seems maybe it's something with Linux? It could be a hardware fault, but all the parts are new.
I tried the RAM slots A1/B1 and A2/B2, and they both gave me the same specs as below.
ASRock B450M Pro4 motherboard and its
manual
Two sticks of
G.SKILL 8GB DDR4 - 3200 (If you look at the code below, the sticks are running at speeds of 2133 MT/s, which is much slower speeds than advertised.)
The issue is quite aggravating and any deep look into this is much appreciated.
I'm technically running Linux Mint, but it's based off of Ubuntu.

Your screen, graphics card and input device settings could not be detected correctly, You will need to configure these yourself.
it boots fine in default graphics mode but cant use wifi *update last time I restarted the mouse wasnt visible so I couldnt boot
luckily I just bought a raspberry Pi so can still access the web
thanks in advance for any help
I did an update and upgrade recently and it said something was missing and I had to do something but being a noob I didnt know what to do

Though I have been successful in the past, presently in spite of numerous attempts, I cannot successfully install the drivers for this scanner. I had to reinstall the OS and now I cannot get it to work. Any assistance will be appreciated.

I have an HP Officejet Pro 8710. Many have had problems with it. I have had it working great before.
Now it won''t work. I have a 2g & 5g networks available. I'm using static IP.
No matter what I've done, it won't work. I need both the printing and scanning functions.
Download hplip-3.16.5. It installs find. Ran HP-SETUP to no avail. No HP printer detected. The HP works 100% on USB.S
I've looked around and found that Penguin has a version of this printer, as well as a Canon ImageClass D570. I can't get from them the difference between those 2 and the retail versions at Staples, etc.
Does anyone know what separates Penguin from the retailers? I honestly can't get them to tell me.
I've tried HPLIP from 3.16.5 (min per HP for the 8710) and higher.
Thanks.

I've got an older System76 Jackal Pro that I essentially inherited -- one that has seen almost no use -- and I'm trying to repurpose it as a dedicated OBS Studio box. I've done this before on other systems and my setup and/or workflow work pretty well. I've never done it with this hardware vendor + configuration, however.
The machine has dual video cards. There's the built-in Matrox video card that comes with the system, and then there's a Nvidia GeForce GT 730 (a never-before used one I already had on hand for accelerating OBS). I've got Ubuntu 18.04 installed, and I have the proprietary Nvidia drivers installed via the Software & Updates (Additional Drivers) tool (e.g. nvidia-driver-435).
Here are some details:
(1) One, I have both video cards attached to the same monitor (VGA to Matrox card, DVI to Nvidia card). Both cards are enabled in the BIOS. The monitor works with the VGA (Matrox) but gets no signal from the DVI (Nvidia).
(2) The glxgears utility runs as expected. No surprises there.
(3) Three, glxinfo reports that my OpenGL vendor is "VMware, Inc.' and that my OpenGL renderer is "llvmpipe". Tell me if I'm wrong, but that indicates to me that its using software rendering and not utilizing the Nvidia card at all.
(4) The nvidia-settings tool will open, but there are no listed GPUs.
(5) The 'lshw -C video' command lists both video cards -- "GK20BB [GeForce GT 730" and "MGA G200e [Pilot] ServerEngines (SEP1)". The Nvidia is shown as running the 'nvidia' driver. The only problematic message I see from dmesg is "EDAC sbridge: Failed to register device with error -19"
(6) If I run 'lsmod | grep nvidia' I see nvidia_uvm, nvidia_drm, nvidia_modeset and nvidia all running
(7) I have added nomodeset to GRUB as a kernel parameter and that didn't seem to make any difference.
(8) I have libgl1-mesa-glx, libglx-mesa0, libglx0 and libxcb packages installed.
(9) The gpu-manager.log file reports "Skipping '/dev/dri/card0', driven by 'nvidia-drm'
Any advice on how I can get this Nvidia card working so I can offload video rendering in OBS Studio to the GPU?

I've tried installing the proprietary i965-va-driver-shaders and intel-media-va-driver-non-free packages (over i965-va-driver and intel-media-va-driver) and switched back again.
I've tried installing the oibaf PPA found here:
https://launchpad.net/~oibaf/+archiv...aphics-drivers
(even tried switching the repository to 20.04 (Focal Fossa) to no avail).
I've also tried installing the upstream 5.4.1 kernel following this as a guide:
https://www.tecmint.com/upgrade-kernel-in-ubuntu/
Nothing seems to work.

I have a tablet PC (Yoga Book C930) with Wacom support which
worked fine for a few months. A few weeks ago it became incredibly slow and often the window manager seems to restart or the desktop manager restarts entirely. (Windows is also installed and no problems there.)
In
dmesg it seems that the USB HID device(s) are constantly being de-registered and re-registered. The problem is there is no
reason given for being de-registered and it does not happen at predictable intervals. Occasionally it's fine for a minute but then starts doing it every few seconds.
This is happening with the stock Ubuntu 18.04 with all the latest updates. Unfortunately I am not sure exactly when it broke. However I know for sure that things worked in the past when I was e.g. using kernel 4.15.0-51 and a few later ones. Now I have gone back and tried that kernel (4.15.0-51), which now
doesn't work anymore and several later ones through to 4.15.0-70, with no success.
Just in case there were any kernel of userland updates that would help, I did an upgrade from 18.04 to 20.04 (kernel 5.3.0) which did not fix the problem..
I get this kind of loop in dmesg:
Code:

I'd like to highlight these lines:
[HTML][HTML]
Code:

If I blacklist `usbhid` (while the system is running) the problem is gone and when I un-blacklist it (while the system is running) it comes back.
Note that the "deregistering" entries come out of the blue a few seconds after the previous log entry. They do not seem to be "triggered" by anything. I am wondering whether there is somewhere I can get more detailed output about USB goings-on? (I have already tried log level 7.) I have experience writing drivers so I can get my hands pretty dirty but I'm not sure where to start.
Any other ideas? Thanks!

Someone gave me an old very nice laptop. I need to add ram and my question is:
to add to the existing ram which is: 2Rx8 PCL 12800S 4GB can I use any PCL 12800S or does i also have to have the prefix of 2Rx8
Also is it possible other ram types would be accepted? Thanks

Can anyone recommend a printer for me.
Qualities:
- laser color, like (Canon imageCLASS MF632CDW)
- all in one (printer, scanner are the main requirements)
- wireless
- document feed
- ubuntu 19.10 compatible
- web interface scanner. This is the main thing I find hard to determine if a product has it. Basically, I have an old HP officeJet 6700 that I only use as a scanner. It has a web interface (192.169.x.x) and you just go into it. You run your scan and it produces a pdf/jpg... on it's own. Then you can just download that to your laptop/pc like a regular file download in a web browser. No scanner drivers needed. I find this the easiest way for a casual scanner like myself.

Hello, dear locals!
I've noticed a boot delay on my Vaio notebook:
Code:
$ systemd-analyze
Startup finished in 36.235s (kernel) + 11.818s (userspace) = 48.054s
graphical.target reached after 11.803s in userspace
And I think this may be the cause:
Code:
$ dmesg -T | grep keyboard
[Tue Dec 3 20:08:23 2019] input: AT Translated Set 2 keyboard as /devices/platform/i8042/serio0/input/input2

[Tue Dec 3 20:08:59 2019] sony_laptop: couldn't set up keyboard backlight function (-16)
Just for detalization - keyboard backlight works fine.
expanded dmesg log with some trace info goes here(260 lines):

Would be nice to switch some check(s) off during boot process!
And to be able to turn on my keyboard backlight after boot.
4.15.0-72-generic #81-Ubuntu SMP
Ubuntu 18.04.3 LTS
Just for detalization:
I have an additional gaming keyboard with backlight, but this problem persists both with and without it. This is definitely a problem related to integrated (native notebook) keyboard.

I'm thinking about building a machine with an AMD Ryzen cpu that also functions as a gpu.
I'm wondering if this setup will be a problem for Ub 18.04.
cpu/gpu AMD Ryzen 5 2400G Processor with Radeon RX Vega 11 Graphics YD2400C5FBBOX
mobo GIGABYTE B450M DS3H (AMD Ryzen AM4/M.2/HMDI/DVI/USB 3.1/DDR4/Micro ATX/Motherboard)
16 gigs ram.
Any info or opinions?
Thanks

The title says it. Any ideas / opinions?
This would be for a desktop, mostly for routine video / audio processing non-gaming applications.
Thanks

As the title says, I've bought a new 4K monitor to replace my ancient one, but Ubuntu won't let me set any resolution higher than the older 1920x1080.
Any ideas about how to fix this?

Hey everyone!
I'm kind of new in Ubuntu, but very intent. My desktop is a Lenovo Y520. I have a few problems with my Ubuntu 18.04. One of them is my bluetooth mouse, which is a Microsoft Z5000. My OS can connect and disconnect very easily, even after suspend, but sometimes the mouse starts to be very laggy. I've been looking for a solution on several topics in connection with this theme, without success. Under Windows it was perfect, so with my phone. So, I reckon that the source of the problem is with my OS.
I've figured out that the /sys/module/usbhid/parameters/mousepoll path doesn't exist at the system start. So, when I hit the cat /sys/module/usbhid/parameters/mousepoll command, I get "No such file or directory".
After these commands the situation is a little bit better, but apparently not the best:
modprobe -r usbhid
modprobe usbhid mousepoll=8
I found these here:
https://forum.manjaro.org/t/wireless...rable/99702/16
I've added this command too:
echo "options usbhid mousepoll=8">> /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
However after I hit these commands, the mentioned path exist! So, I get an exact number for my mousepoll question, which would be the usual way of its working, I suppose. This state maintains until I reboot my laptop.
Would somebody help me in this?

If I wanted to replace, say, about 7 or 8 6TB SAS hard drives in an mdadm RAID6 array with 12TB ones, I am given to understand that I can simply swap them out one by one and then expand the partition size.
Anyone have a quick reference on how to do this? I've been skimming the mdadm documentation and I'm not finding anything exactly like what I'm looking for.
Many thanks, in advance! = )
